Question:

Check engine light???

My girlfriend's car had the check engine light come on the other day. She was going in for an oil change anyway, so she asked the guy if he could check it out to see what was wrong with it. He had informed her that the flex pipe was falling off, so he bolted it on for her since she didn't have the money to pay for it then. Tonight, the check engine light went off. Does that mean the problem is probably twice as bad, or is it okay?

  1. If the light came on as a result of the flex pipe then yes, when the pipe was repaired the computer observed a period of time without a bad signal from the sensor it will assume it was fixed and turn off the light.

The only problem I have with this is I don't know what sensor would report a bad flex pipe (maybe the O2 sensor would). The flex pipe may have just been a coincidence and the check engine light came on because of a signal from another sensor. Either way don't worry unless it comes back on, if it does find an auto parts store that offers free code reading and have them tell you what sensor is reporting a problem.

    Good Luck!

  2. That means he fixed it. The bad reading that was causing the light is gone.

  3. this just means he probably took care of the problem, the check engine light may come back on until she has the trouble code completely erased from the computer and then again it may never come on again,he may have taken care of the problem for good with it,good luck.

  4. The CEL (check engine light) may have been caused by the emissions controller that detected the leak in the exhaust system.

It may be fixed temporarily but she may need to replace the gaskets between the flexpipe and the components that it connects to (varies slightly by car) or the entire flexpipe.

    Shouldn't be too expensive.
