Question:

Check engine light woes

My 5 speed Honda is not as smooth shifting from 4th to 5th as between all the other gears. Consequently, I accidently shifted into 3rd instead of 5th on the freeway. I was probably going 50 and it revved the rpm's to about 5000, but certainly not into the red zone. A few minutes later the check engine light came on. The mechanic said it's an O2 sensor code and aparently this car needs some rare 7-wire o2 sensor??? Coincidentally, (or not?) the car has been a little slower on the start up. Not horrible, it just seems like the starter winds about twice as long... it used to just turn over and purr right away.

  1. Looks like your going to have to find that seven wire 02 sensor in order to get your car going right again. If it is the 02sensor , it will make it use more gas and the car will slow down sooner or later.Just get that 02 sensor order .Your lucky that the tranny is'nt laying on the road .

  2. It is probably not related. An O2 sensor malfunction will only cause you to get worse gas mileage depending on which one it is. The starting issue may be because you need a tune-up so ask the mechanic about that unless you want to do it yourself. It is not hard, and can be done with hand tools. How much do they want for the sensor? You could try to find one cheaper online at www.rockauto.com or www.autopartsauthority.com if you want to replace it.

  3. I cant reallly think of the connection between the over reving and the engine troubles your experiancing. The check engine light could easily come on though because the sudden high rpm's can sometimes set off a sensor. The 02 sensor would not be one I would think of as setting under those conditions. I would look up on Autozone.com for the sensor. Its usually a little more realistic as far as price goes. I have customers who buy parts online to try and save money then get stung with the shipping. You should have listed the year and model of yuor car so I could have given you a little more info. I always first try to clean the 02 sensor by removing a large vacume hose, like the brake booster is a good one. Then run the car for like 10-15 minutes. That causes the engine to lean out and the sensor usually burns clean solving the 02 sensor problem.
