Question:

Check fuel cap message!

Hi. I recently got "Check fuel cap" message about two weeks ago on my 2006 honda accord v4. I tightened my fuel cap again and drove a while and it turned off gradually, but as I tested my mileage per a full tank, it came out to be just below 300 miles (about 290), which i think it pretty bad.

I wonder if check fuel cap message is turned off, there's no problem?

or it just turned off because I ignored it for some time.

Because the miles i get per a full tank is so low (It used to be about 350 I assume) I worry that there could be a leak or something.

Help!

  1. A bad fuel cap means an evaporative emissions leak, as far as the computer in the car is concerned. The computer would then leave the car running in open loop mode to compensate for the cap. Replace the fuel cap and you should see some improvement.

  2. go to auto zone, they can check for codes in computer and see if problem is still there.  they will do this for no charge.

  3. this could be as simple as changing the $2 rubber gasket that's part of the fuel cap - I would try that first
