My checkbook was stolen and thre were checks written off it. From whoever stole my checkbook. I reported it to the bank, the bank has a office clerk who does NOT know what she is doing, handeling this and noting is being resoved. They did NOT give me a new checking account, which I need, but do not want from this bank it is obvious they do NOT know what they are doing. Can I get another checking account from another bank? There are many banks out there and another bank would love to have my business. Do to the checkbook being taken my account is in the negative. Just need to get another checking account. HOW??? Thank you for your help It is appreciated.

  1. Doesn't your bank have someone competent who can resolve the problem with your existing account?  I would go back and ask for a manager to get that resolved.  I'm concerned that they're not doing it properly because they may turn around and make negative reports about you that will be more work to get removed.  Or, if it is a large bank, call their 800 number and ask for help.

And yes, you can open another account wherever you like.  And definitely do it quickly.  You might want to consider a credit union.

  2. You should be able to open a new account at a different bank, however, if you are negative in your current account it may affect your ability to get a new account.  Some banks will do a check with your social security number before issuing you an account.  If they do and your current negative amount shows up from your other bank account they may deny you an account.  Also if you have bad credit or a history of writing cold checks some banks will deny you an account.

I would definitely try to resolve this issue with your bank.  If the account continues to be negative it will probably affect your credit rating.  When your checks were stolen did you report it?  If you didn't report it right away you may not have much recourse unless you can prove that the signatures on the stolen checks are not yours.  Your bank should have copies of the checks.  I would ask for copies of the checks, go into

your branch office and ask to speak with the branch manager.  He/she should be able to clear it up and get you reimbursed.  Then you can go elsewhere for your banking.   Good luck to you.

  3. Well before you seek a new account be sure you are not being jipped by your current one. Remember, you can always contact the FTC or BBB if your fraudulent charges are being unresolved. You may also want to see an attorney's help.

However, there are plenty of banks that allow you to open an instant account online, with no monthly fees. The two I can think of are WaMu and Bank of America, both of which are very easy to acquire.

You can also open an account at any bank as long as your current account hasn't been sent to collections.

  4. you can change your bank for sure but before doing that, you need to resolve your current acct situation. your bank can file a dispute on all the charges that were unauthorized. try calling their risk operations department or talk to their management to put a restraint on the account. You will be given credits for the transactions or automatically, the account will be set to close.

Then that's the time you can open another account and put the funds into it, regardless which bank you choose
