Checking accounts?

I am curious as to how debt collectors are able to get bank account information. Also if a person has a credit judgement against them, is the financial institution required to give them account numbers? Thank You

  1. Debt collectors could get this info from the original creditor, especially if you paid by check.

Here in Indiana, if the judgement is over a certain amount (whatever the max is for small claims court now), they can deduct it directly from your bank account(s) if the funds are available. That does, however, require a court order.

Your bank should NOT be giving any info to anyone without that court order!
