Question:

Checking in Chess?

Ok I was just playing a game of chess with my friend just now. What happened was this: He moved his bishop to pin my castle (I could not move it without being in check). Then in return I checked him with my queen. Now here is the question: Could he take my queen legally? I ask this because basically, if he did take it, he would get himself in check by the pinned castle. BUT I can't take his king with the castle since by doing so it would get my king in check. I hope this makes sense.

  1. He cannot make a move that puts him in check.....

  2. No, capturing the Queen is illegal if it leaves him in check.  It's irrelevant that the castle (Rook) which is attacking his King is pinned.

  3. no

  4. No he can't take your queen legally. If he did, he would be in check and therefore your castle could kill his king and win the game.

Even though you would then be in check, he would have lost so it wouldnt matter.

    Im pretty sure.

  5. I understand: the "castle is supporting the Queen" but your "castle" is pinned. Yes quite a conundrum !!

    BUT...

I have your answer, the King cannot touch the Queen, in otherwords

He cannot capture the queen, I don't know where that part of the rules is explained but I have played enough chess to know!

  6. No he can't.    (For "lightning" and "blitz" chess see note).

Chess is a wargame.  You would capture/kill his king first so his army would immediatley surrender, before he could kill yours.

(Note.  Under some quick play tournament rules,  he could leave himself in check. Then you win by taking his king the next move, IF you spot it.)

  7. He could not take your queen legally. You are never allowed to expose your king to check for any reason. It doesn't matter that the piece that would put his king in check was pinned.
