Checkmate in chess?

When you have a person's king in check and they cannot move out of check and it is your turn and the situation is not a stalemate and you declare, "Checkmate," should you move your piece to knock over the other person's king or should you just move your piece up to that person's piece and say "checkmate" or should you just not even move you piece and say checkmate? (is it all just personal preference?) Also, is there any difference between "checkmate" and "mate"?

  1. if your opponent's king is in check and it cannot move out of check it is checkmate. you can't make a move after that because you already won!

and checkmate and mate is the same thing. it's just mate is the shorter way of saying checkmate.

  2. First, mate is when, in the current position, if the other person did not move any of their pieces, you could capture his or her King .Checkmate is when the person can move nothing to block your capture.

I believe the correct etiquette is to move your piece to your desired position and declare checkmate. By this I mean the position from which your opponent has no escape, not from actually moving your piece to the square occupied by your opponent's king.

  3. The difference between "mate" and "checkmate" is this:

"Mate" or "Check" (as I call it)  means that you have currently checked the king, meaning that you are in a situation where you can kill the king, but the king can still move out of the way.

"Checkmate" is when you have Checked your opponent and they have no where to move, thus you win the game.

I usually just move my player and call Checkmate.  Sometimes I take the King off but it is the end of the game so sometimes there isn't too much point to it.  But it's true, it's more personal preference but you should probably move your player to show them you can Checkmate them.

  4. no, u shall stay wherever u are and instead of sayin check, u shall straightaway say checkmate if u think that the other player cannot save his king.

  5. In that situation, I just say checkmate. There is no difference between checkmate and mate. I think it's all personal preference though.

  6. yes there is a difference between checkmate and mate.

    A mate is a friend

  7. It is polite to assume they know and just say checkmate or mate.  If they it is not then you can pick up the piece delivering check.

There is no difference between "checkmate" and "mate" unless you are Australian.:)

  8. It is personal preference. But basically if the position before you is mate  you say Checkmate simple. No need to do any thing else.Note to make you tip your own king when resigning or admitting mate you do not tip over the other guy's king that would be humiliating. And no there is no difference between mate and check mate

  9. you move your piece then declare checkmate, shake hands, then clean up
