Question:

Cheerleading Information

My parents said I could start cheerleading, I already do at camp as a flyer and we practice a lot so I'm pretty good. What concerns us most are the injuries. What's the worst that can happen from being a flyer? (I can do up to a bow and arrow) We haven't done any throws or tosses, only lifts. Is there a chance of being paralyzed or even dying? Thank you.

  1. well there is always a chance. i have been a cheerleader for over 4 years. usually though people are careful and you will most always fly on a mat until you are good at your stunt. just be confident and try to keep yourself up there becuase most accidents that i have been involved in are becuase the flyer bails out of the stunt and makes herself fall! just dont do that haha. and try not to worry i am sure you will fly with experienced people and their instinct is to catch people i promise! but cheerleading is an amazing sport, you should try it! its worth everything when you are in front of the crowd and you stick it!

  2. You can get paralyzed really bad.  When you get to basket tosses make sure you don't lean too much to the front back left or right or else it will be harder for your bases to catch you.  Live up to dreams!

  3. if you land the wrong way, then there's a chance you could be paralyzed but i've never heard anyone die from doing cheerleading

  4. hope this link might help you http://www.linkbucks.com/link/ff3d4400/2...

  5. i've been a cheerleader for 8 years now. i'm a flyer also. i've sprained my ankle about 3 times stunting, and another time tumbling. and also from tumbling i hyper-extended and sprained my elbow. i've been kicked in the face many times. so yeah, there's lots of ways to be injured in cheerleading, but that's stuff you just have to be prepared for.

about a week ago, my mom (who's my assistant cheer coach) was watching something on tv about how this girl was doing a full down and someone caught her wrong and ruptured her spleen. she died. then they advertised this vest that's designed to make sure that you don't get hurt when you're doing full/double downs.

i also know of an ankle brace made for flyers to help keep your ankle from rolling while doing one-legged stunts.

so yeah, there's lots of ways to get hurt, and there's always a chance you might be seriously injured, but there are ways to prevent injury, like those vests & braces.

  6. yes, with any sport, there is a chance of being paralyzed and dying. the thing is, usually the bases get hurt. it is the bases job to catch you NO MATTER WHAT, so they will not drop you even if it means hurting themselves. the most risk comes with basket tosses, but those are practiced with a great deal of safety. to avoid injury, just stay tight when you are being dropped and cradle if you are falling rather than landing on your feet (which could get you a broken ankle) i have been flying for 3 years and i havent seen and flyers get injured. every sport has risks, and you have to take them if you want to excel in a sport!

  7. Yes actually there is a big risk. But if you have a spotters you really trust and are really good, you will be fine. Just make sure you know how to fall. You must fall onto someone and you have to kind of sit. Don't stiffen when you are falling because then it is harder to catch. Also don't be afraid to fall. If you know you are going to fall, you mind as well do it right before you just fall. When you do tosses, make sure you are tight and in a perfect pike, but sitting. Make sure your butt goes first, your arms are in a perfect t and your legs are together. Also you just go along for the ride. The easiest way to get dropped in a cradle is to jump majorly(really little ones are not bad. I actually did one today when cradling and I ended up doing a perfect one.). Just ride it out. You just need to make sure you feel secure. If you are going up and you don't feel like you are supported, don't let it go up any further. No one will blame you if you need to stop. Remember that your spotters are there strictly for your safty. And remember that you control the stunt. Don't let anything happen that you don't feel comfertable with. But also be willing to take risks. Start small and maybe watch someone first.

    Hope I helped!!
