In Australia, do women say 'cheers' to each other only or to the opposite s*x as well?

How about do men say "mate' to other men only?

  1. Cheers is from and to everyone, regardless of s*x.

I don't say mate but I get called mate occasionally (and I'm female). Mate can also be from and to everyone but I guess it's more common for males to use it for males.

  2. We say both to both sexes.

    Cheers mate!

  3. Most of us don't speak very differently, than Americans or English people with the exception of a few slang words--- and NOT as bad as  the Americans make it !!! We tend to say 'mate ' alot even women , for eg.you may say 'thanks mate' or 'how are you, mate' cheers, from what l have come across mostly, is a word men use it can mean ---- thanks, bye , or just plain 'cheers' when your having a drink.

  4. i have been called mate by men before. we say it to kids too. like "little matey".LOL.

  5. Mate is for usually address to male only

While cheers, u can use it for female, male or transgender too

  6. I say Cheers Big Ears. We also say mate/ cheers to whoever & when needed.

  7. Actually, the only people I know who say 'cheers' to anyone are British migrants or people who hang around with them. It's not really an Australian expression, though from some of your other answers, some may disagree with that statement. I never say 'cheers' - it sounds too pommy to me.

Men say 'mate' to other men and to women they know well (in some circles) and some call everyone 'mate'. I had a bloke doing some work around the yard for me here yesterday and he called me 'mate'. Women rarely call anyone mate, though I sometimes say 'G'day mate' to my friends (but I'm old and a bit strange).
