Cheetahs' flanker Juan Smith to recover before World Cup – Super Rugby update
Juan Smith, the South African flanker was under the observation of Cheetah’s medical staff, who has declared him to be in good form. This development means that the flanker will not be ruled out of the World Cup this year.
The 29 year old Springbok was under a surgery this week, after suffering through a fractional slit of his Achilles tendon this weekend during Cheetah’s defeat to the Bulls in a Super Rugby fixture. It was first thought that his Achilles has been completely
damaged and Smith won’t be able to play for a very long period of time.
But according to the latest development, Ian Morris, Smith’s doctor declared that he will recover in the maximum time of six months. This means that Smith will be in running condition for the New Zealand’s tour for the international tournament.
South Africa will be opening their struggle World Cup trophy on 11thSeptember against Wales.
Ian Morris said, “We are scheduling on having him fit for the World Cup. There is absolutely a possibility that he can recuperate in time. If the whole thing goes well, six months is not an irrational recovery period.”
He gladly added, “He will be able to play in August and the World Cup starts at the beginning of September.”
Juan Smith is a South African rugby union blindside flanker, who also plays as a number eight. He plays in Super 14 competition for Cheetahs and also in Currie cup for Free State Cheetahs. The 6ft 5in gigantic flanker has earned 42 caps for Springboks and
scored a total of 50 points. He is currently captain of his club in Super Rugby and looking forward to get over the injury and make a comeback in Rugby World Cup 2011 in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, Cheetahs seem to be in trouble, as their other option, Heinrich Brussow doesn’t seem to be ready to play for the club either for this weekend’s clash in Cape Town against the Stormers.
Heinrich Brussow recently made his comeback against Falcon this Friday after sustaining a long term knee injury. He is expected to return to his club to feature for next weekend’s fixture after recovering for a surgery. The surgery is for the repairing of
his worn out ligaments.
