Cheick Kongo outwits Shawn Jordan to collect unanimous decision win at UFC 149 – UFC News
Cheick Kongo, the veteran UFC heavyweight pounder, made an impressive comeback on the win track by collecting a unanimous decision against Shawn Jordan, in a lacklustre three-round clash held on July 21, 2012.
The duo met on the main card of UFC 149 headlined by the interim UFC bantamweight title bout between Urijah Faber and Renan Barao. The event was televised live from Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The fight card was co-headlined by the non-title middleweight bout between x. Kongo, 37, who was entering his career’s 27th bout, boasting 17 wins, did not deliver much in fact just kept on defending himself from the wave of takedowns thrown by young Shawn.
Jordan, 27, was entering his career’s 17th bout, boasting 13 wins. The young American proud stood no chance at all in front of the huge Frenchman and eventually succumbed to Kongo’s superior power and strength.
Despite the fact that both brawlers are considered as knockout specialist, Jordan moved on with a different strategy altogether. The reason for the takedown-game plan was most probably the lethal knockout power of Kongo has nailed 10 of his opponents by
sheer knockout.
At the end of the day, despite several takedowns, Shawn emerged out of the octagon as a loser since he was unable to capitalise even a single takedown as a result Kongo moved on to collect his career’s 18th win via unanimous decision.
Kongo’s hold on the ground was commendable since Jordan also known as ‘The Savage’, attempted 10 plus takedowns but it was due to Cheick’s firm and strong hold that enabled him to nullify all those attempts.
In almost the last 30 seconds of the third round, Shawn came across a golden opportunity. Kongo attempted a takedown which got a bit out of hand and Jordan came over with Kongo flattened on the ground.
Even in those 30 seconds, Shawn did not inflict even split damage to the veteran, enabling Cheick to collect 30-27 on two cards and 30-28 on the third one. After the bout, Kongo while sharing his thoughts stated, I tried to keep control of him. I hit him
with some good strikes and landed a few good knees. I even stopped his takedowns. I need to go back and work on a few things, but I'm glad I got the win. I will continue to train hard with my camp.”
With this win, Kongo has returned on the win track after a dismal loss to Mark Hunt. Shawn, on the other hand, has received his fourth career loss and first in UFC.
