Cheikh Tiote flattered by comparisons to Michael Essien
Newcastle United midfielder Cheikh Tiote has said he is flattered by being likened to Chelsea's Michael Essien after making a strong start to his career at the club.
Tiote, 24, joined Chris Hughton's side from Dutch champions FC Twente, where he was coached by Englishman Steve McClaren between 2008 and 2010.
According to the midfielder, it was his former manager who suggested he move to the Premier League ahead of the current season.
"[McClaren] said to me that my style is suited to the English game, so as soon as Newcastle were interested, I jumped at the possibility of playing for them," the Ivorian told Newcastle's official website.
"Back in Holland, I always watched the Premier League and I really enjoyed watching it. So to now be playing in it is an achievement for me."
Tiote made his debut against Everton on 18 September, and has started in all six of the team's league fixtures since, proving an important addition to Hughton's midfield.
With his strong defensive coverage, Tiote is able to guard Newcastle's back four while making occasional and well-timed contributions further up the pitch.
His display in Newcastle's 2–1 win over West Ham United on 23 October was particularly telling of his potential.
Aims set high
After being impressed by his new signing, Hughton has compared Tiote to Ghana's Essien for his stamina and comprehensive game. Tiote said he is flattered by Hughton's comments.
"Obviously I'm only young but to be compared to Essien is quite a compliment, I've always seen Essien as a role model in midfield and one day I hope to be as good as him — or even better!"
After a strong start to their league campaign, Newcastle are seventh in the league with 14 points from ten games.
Their next fixture is a tough away trip to the Emirates Stadium on Sunday, 7 November, where second-placed Arsenal await.
