Chella Choi beats expectations at Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012
South Korean Chella Choi displayed a better-than-expected performance at the Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012, as she finished tied for the second spot on the leaderboard.
The tournament, played at Waterloo, Canada, stretched into playoff, with American Brittany Lang grabbing the title. However, Choi was happy to perform well, as she posted an overall 268 on the leaderboard.
The South Korean star kicked off the final round of the inaugural Manulife Financial LPGA Classic 2012 in an impressive style, as she made perfect strokes on most of the holes. She posted a stunning 63 in the fourth round and battled three other contenders, Brittany Lang, Hee Kyung Seo and Inbee Park in playoff.
Although she could not beat Lang, who drained three straight birdies on the 18th hole in playoff, analysts said that her performance cheered her fans.
Choi and the three contenders, Park, Lang and Seo, posted a total 268 each in the concluding round and the match was forced to enter into playoff.
Choi, Park and Seo could not perform well and they let Lang outperform them easily.
Despite losing in playoff, Choi looked completely fired up, as she said that she never thought that she would be able to perform well against big names. She said that she could have done better, but what she did was enough for her.
Explaining what helped her on the course, the South Korean golfer said that she has been training hard on the practice range for months, which proved beneficial for her.
Choi pointed out the only thing that helped her post a decent score was her superb putting. “Today was a very good day and my shot is really good and my putting is really, really good, so I'm very happy. And my best round today, my best finish today, so I'm very happy,” the LPGA sensation said.
Although the match ended on a promising note, rough weather conditions troubled most of contenders. When asked how she tackled strong winds, Choi said that she just held her nerve on the course, which helped her make calculated putts.
“I don't know, maybe a little bit, but I'm grateful because I don't care wind, so it's fine,” she shared.
