Chella Choi exhibits mercurial performance once again
South Korean Chella Choi, who has performed well in some of the tournaments in the current season, missed the cut at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012 in another demonstration of her mercurial game.
The reputation Choi has gained over the months still warrants top finish at any prestigious tournament on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) as she is best known for making unpredictable comebacks.
But the battle at the Navistar LPGA Classic 2012, at Prattville, Alabama, quickly turned into the scene of disappointment and regret, and it exposed fatal flaws in Choi’s game.
Coming off a solid finish at the Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 that saw her tie for the 10th position, Choi’s grim putting had a lot to answer for this last week as she could not make calculated strokes on most of the holes in the first two rounds.
Starting the opening round with heaps of enthusiasm on Thursday at Prattville, Choi vowed to do her best once again, but when it came time to make a score, her strokes lost vitality. Having carded a 74 in the first round, the LPGA star got off to a very shaky start, which took a serious toll on performance in the second round as well.
A 70 in the second round was not enough to sail her through to the next phase, and she had to storm off the course right away.
Observers said that Choi has shown a solid performance in some of the tournaments in the current season but the lack of consistency has a lot to answer for. They pointed out that the coming tournaments will be crucial for the young star, but she needs to come up with a more pragmatic strategy this time.
Observes also said that making the cut at the last tournament should not be frowned upon because Choi has done well in some of the recent LPGA events, which speaks of her unmatched skills.
For instance, the CN Canadian Women’s Open 2012 saw her display a stellar performance as she finished tied for the third position on the leaderboard. Similarly at the Jamie Farr Toledo Classic that was held in August 2012, she maintained her momentum and recorded a 3T position.
