Chelsea 2-0 Wolves- Match Report
The Blue Brigade from Stamford Bridge rolls on as they stretched their lead at the top of the table defeating Wolves 2-0 at home. Wolves though did give the champions a good fight and did not make things any easier for Chelsea.
Wolves created several chances in a game that was end to end from the first whistle. David Edwards and Kevin Doyle both had guilt edge chances to open the scoring for the visitors.
However eventually it was the attacking potency of Chelsea that prevailed which resulted in the Frenchman Florent Malouda who got the first goal from Yuri Zhirkov's pass.
Chelsea also created multiple chances but failed to convert; in the end it was a late goal from substitute Salomon Kalou that put the game to bed.
The 2nd goal of the match was preceded by some excellent play by the champions, it was created from a sublime move that involved Michael Essien and Didier Drogba and Wolves were literally carved open by the Blues in that instance.
Wolves were in general outplayed but would be looking back at number of chances that they missed, and failed to score their first league goal at Stamford Bridge.
All things taken into account it was another commanding performance from the champions, who have now moved 8 points clear at the top. Leaving behind Manchester City, Arsenal and Manchester United. Chelsea for sure could have had 2 to 3 more goals, but still
Ancelotti would be happy with all 3 points at home.
Wolves who were by far the underdogs started the match brightly, in first 7 minutes the visitors had 3 quick corners. But the physical advantage of Chelsea was evident and Wolves hardly had a sniff in those set pieces.
Mathew Jarvis was looking good in attack and did cause few problems to Chelsea backline due to his pace and creativity. Wolves did start as typical away team and lined up with a 4-5-1 formation, but soon they were looking more adventurous and were not afraid
to commit men in attack.
David Edwards was well placed in the box when Jarvis sent in a curling cross, but was only able to head it wide. Jarvis continued to deliver balls into the box, and later Jelle Van Damme and Doyle both squandered chances from Jarvis’ deliveries.
Chelsea looked a bit subdued in first 15 minutes or so finally got into motion soon after, and the attacks started with the full backs Ashley Cole and Jose Bosingwa bombing forward in attack on both flanks.
The constant attacks meant that Chelsea were vulnerable at the back, but that did not deter them. One of those attacks resulted in the opening goal. It was the pace of Drogba and Nicolas Anelka that made the move as Chelsea intercepted the ball from midfield.
Zhirkov got the ball at the by-line and laid it back for Malouda to slam home the ball for one nil.
Wolves were not affected much after going back and continued to move forward, Nenad Milijas got on the end of a good move. Nenad tried his luck from distance twice and did sting Chelsea Keeper’s hands but was not able to get the ball past him. Ivorain Salomon
Kalou came on as a substitute and looked energetic. It was a well worked move late in the game that enabled Kalou to get his name on the score sheet.
Michael Essien started the move from midfield and after playing a neat one two with Drogba on the wing cut inside to get into the box, the Ghana captain played a clever reverse pass to Kalou who drilled the ball into the net. The match was finally put to
bed and 3 points were in the bag for the champions.
