Chelsea Assistant Coach Ray Wilkins not impressed with his side’s performance
Assistant manager Ray Wilkins has confessed that his side Chelsea was not playing at their true potential, when the Blues thrashed Arsenal 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
It was Didier Drogba yet again who found the back of the net with a clever back heel just before half time, followed by a rocket Free kick by Alex to seal the deal at Stamford Bridge. However, the score line wouldn’t provide justice to the visiting side,
who had long periods of possession as well as got close to scoring on various occasions. The Gunners really took the game to the home side and Ancelotti’s men had to really dig for all three points against the North Londoners.
Carlo Ancelotti was unable to present himself in front of the press owing to the recent passing of his father and Wilkins was thus asked to comment on the team’s performance.
Wilkins attended the post-match press conference on the request of coach Carlo Ancelotti, whose father recently passed away.
"Arsenal are a very good side indeed and make it extremely difficult for us. For us to beat them is always a delight. It's not always very pleasant to look at but it's effective and I thought the lads were terrific. Sometimes when you are playing this wonderful
game of ours you can't always do what you want to do, you have to fight and scrap and I think we had that quality to do so and when we get in the final third, we certainly have the quality to finish teams off.", claimed the Assistant coach.
It was Drogba who was awarded the man of the match award and the manager was delighted by the Ivorian striker who seems to find the net every time he plays the Blues. In the past 13 appearances against Arsenal, Drogba has scored in each which is a tremendous
record. His back heel was unstoppable as it hit the post and went in, giving second choice keeper Fabianski no chance. The manager explained that Drogba is an extra-ordinary talented player who was on fire against Arsenal. The manager stated that towards the
end of the match, Drogba was seen pacing up and down the pitch and was also able to cover for Alex as a centre back towards the end of the match. Wilkins was therefore delighted with the exciting team spirit and winning mentality the players currently have
at the club.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also had good words to say regarding his team’s performance and blamed the inability to convert opportunities the main reason behind Arsenal’s fifth straight loss to Chelsea. In form Marouane Chamakh’s header was deflected early
on but it was Koscielny who spoiled the best chance of the game. The defender missed an open chance in front of goal but couldn’t control the ball and fired it high above the goal. The manager stated that this was a perfect example of playing a good game and
still loosing. Wenger explained that his side should’ve wrapped things up in the opening minutes and it was just unbelievable to see a six yard header missed by his players.
It was the same score line last season with which Gunners lost to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and similar comments were made by Arsene Wenger. The win against Arsenal has given the Chelsea a 5 point lead over Manchester City, who are just one point above
Manchester United. The league goes into an International break and would return on 16th October, where Chelsea would be travelling to Aston Villa.
