Chelsea Gillett wins Girls 400m freestyle meet - 2011 State Teams Age Short Course Championships
Chelsea Gillett of Queensland claimed the gold medal of Girls 400m freestyle in the 13-14 years old category on the initial day of the 2011 State Teams Age Short Course Australian Championships. The session ended on September 17, at Australian Institute
of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
The 14-year-old teenager posted a miraculous time of 4 minutes and 15.24 seconds for the title of the event. Her time was 0.43 seconds ahead of her closest competitor and team-member, Chelsea Gubecka, who occupied the silver medal of the event with a timing
of 4 minutes and 15.67 seconds. The third spot of the race was secured by Meg Bailey of New South Wales, who remained nearly three seconds behind the silver medallist and submitted a time of 4 minutes and 18.48 seconds for bronze medal.
Gillett remained nearly two seconds away from improving the age group record of Remy Fairweather of Queensland, who clocked a time of 4 minutes and 13.52 seconds in 2010.
Nevertheless, the fourth spot of the race was secured by Gubecka’s team-mate, Amy Forrester, who ended her swim in a time of 4 minutes and 22.18 seconds for fourth position. She was trailed by Meg Parry and Kate Laidlaw of Victoria, who ended their swim
in fifth and sixth places, with timings of 4:23.98 and 4:25.68 minutes, respectively.
Moments later, the arena witnessed a notable effort of Mack Horton of Victoria, who captured the gold medal of equivalent event in 14-15 years old Boys category. Horton submitted a time of 3 minutes and 55.72 seconds for the title of the event. He was followed
by Ryan Leonard and Jake Hodgetts of New South Wales, who secured silver and bronze medals, with timings of 4:03.30 and 4:04.34 minutes, respectively.
The fourth spot of the race was obtained by Ethan Owens of South Australia, who remained marginally away from the bronze medallist and produced a time of 4 minutes and 05.08 seconds.
The arena went wild with the commendable swims of age group swimmers in the opening events, while they could not wait to see the competition in next events.
