Chelsea Gubecka and Meg Bailey win swimming events – Australian State Teams Age SC Championships
Chelsea Gubecka of Queensland (QLD) and Meg Bailey of New South Wales (NSW) won the titles of Girls 800m freestyle and 400m Individual Medley (IM) in Girls 13-14 years old category, on the last day of 2011 Australian State Teams Age Short Course Championships.
The meet concluded on September 19, after its’ final session at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS), Canberra.
Apart from these distant events, the session also included finals of 100m back-stroke and 4*100m freestyle relay in the 13-14 years old category.
The 13-year-old Gubecka presented a breath-taking effort of 8 minutes and 45.35 seconds in the final round of Girls 800m discipline and occupied the title of the event. She was 4.88 seconds ahead of her following swimmer and team-member, Chelsea Gillett,
who reached the podium for silver medal, by submitting an effort of 8 minutes and 50.23 seconds. Similarly, the third spot of the race was secured by Emil Camenzuli of Victoria (VIC), who remained nearly twelve seconds behind second position holder and reported
a time of 9 minutes and 02.00 seconds for silver medal.
Next was the 400m IM, where Bailey presented a wonderful effort of 4 minutes and 48.98 seconds to claim title of the event. She was trailed by Taylor Green of QLD, who stayed 6.84 seconds slower than Bailey and reached the victory stand for silver medal,
by posting a time of 4 minutes and 55.82 seconds. Green was in a lead of 0.56 seconds over NSW’s Elise Pidutti, as she appeared on the finishing wall for bronze medal, with a timing of 4 minutes and 56.38 seconds.
In the meantime, the crowd witnessed an astounding effort of Lauren Rettie of QLD in the 100m back-stroke swim. Rettie improved the age group record of the event, by producing a remarkable sprint of 1 minute and 00.94 seconds. She was followed by her team-mate,
Amy Forrester and Lucy Soden of VIC, who earned silver and bronze medals, with timings 1:01.10 and 1:02.49 minutes, respectively.
The last event of the session was freestyle relay, where relay squad of VIC obtained gold medal of the event, by posting a time of 3 minutes and 50.57 seconds. They were followed by NSW, which remained just 0.24 seconds slower than their former finisher
and clocked a time of 3 minutes and 50.81 seconds for silver medal. Relay team of QLD finished third, as it posted a time of 3 minutes and 52.12 seconds.
Furthermore, the session continued with the thrilling performances of all age group swimmers, as more events were scheduled to take place in the final night of the championship.
