Chelsea Hit man Didier Drogba Aiming For Hat-trick Of Hat-tricks
Didier Drogba will attempt to become the first player since 1946 to claim three successive hat tricks in the Premier League when Chelsea take on Wigan Athletic today, Saturday, August 21st.
The last player to achieve this impressive feat was Jack Balmer, who played for Liverpool, in 1946. The other players to achieve this before him were Frank Osborne, for Tottenham in 1925 and Tom Jennings of Leeds United, a year later in 1926.
The Ivory Coast international played an important part in the Blues winning their first double last season, the Premier League and the FA Cup. Drogba scored a hat-trick in the last fixture of the previous season, which Chelsea won 8-0, which also happened to be against Wigan.
Last season, Chelsea did not only win their first ever double, they scored 103 goals in the process. Didier Drogba claimed the most coveted golden boot, with goal keeper Petr Cech sharing the golden glove with Liverpool keeper, Pepe Reina.
In the new season, Drogba started where he had left off, scoring a hat-trick in the 6-0 win over West Bromwich Albion in the Blues first fixture of their campaign to defend their title. Florent Malouda and Frank Lampard were the other goal scorers in that match.
Drogba told reporters in a press conference, “I didn't know (about the record) but it is really nice. I have said I want to make history in the club and by being among these big players I have done it. But I don't want to stop here, I want my name as high as I can (get it).”
Bobby Tambling, who had 202 goals, Kerry Dixon with 193, Frank Lampard with 158, Roy Bentley with 150 and Peter Osgood, who had 150 goals are the only Blues who have more goals than Drogba. The Ivorian has 134 goals so far, and will be looking to make it to the clubs top scorer list in this season.
If anyone, Drogba has the most chance scoring against Wigan. Roberto Martinez’s side has the second worst defensive record in the Premier League, behind Wolves. They lost their opening fixture to Blackpool 4-0 at home last Saturday.
