Chelsea among clubs keen on Bayern Munich defender Martin Demichelis
English Premier League champions Chelsea are being linked with a move for Martin Demichelis after the defender revealed his wish to leave German outfit Bayern Munich.
The centre-back was omitted from Louis van Gaal’s squad last Friday as the club defeated Wolfsburg 2-1 in the Bundesliga opening match. That led Demichelis to believe his future lies elsewhere and he asked van Gaal to leave him out of the squad altogether.
The 29-year-old has been with Bayern for seven years after moving from River Plate in his homeland of Argentina. He played regularly last season as Bayern won three trophies. Now, some of Europe’s biggest clubs are chasing his signature, including Chelsea, La Liga giants Barcelona and Serie A club Juventus who are already believed to have held talks with his representative, Jorge Cyterszpiler.
'At least four teams chasing player'
Demichelis’ agent told Italian website Calcio Mercato that: "I have always had an excellent relationship with Juve. We spoke with Juventus, but they are not the only club interested. There are at least four clubs in for the player — as well as the Bianconeri there are also Barcelona, Chelsea and Sevilla."
However, Bayern don’t want to sell the player and, with the transfer window set to close in a week, Cyterszpiler refused to rule out a loan move for the player. He added that “Fiorentina, Napoli and Roma have always liked him” but none of them would be able to afford Demichelis’ transfer on a permanent basis and would have to make a loan bid instead.
Demichelis has had a successful career which has seen him pick up two Argentine championships with River Plate, as well as four Bundesliga titles, four German Cups and two German Super Cups with Bayern. He also featured in the UEFA Champions League final in 2010, which Bayern lost 2-0 to Inter Milan.
