Chelsea and Arsenal remain top two in the Premier League
Chelsea and Arsenal continued to occupy the top-two spots in the Premier League as both ran out comfortable winners today.
Champions Chelsea condemned West Ham to a fourth defeat in their opening four games as Michael Essien scored twice and Salomon Kalou, quite fortunately, put them 3-0 up. Scott Parker, who recently signed a new deal at West Ham, grabbed a consolation goal for the Hammers against his former club, but the 3-1 defeat looks bad for West Ham boss Avram Grant.
Arsenal maintained their unbeaten run as they beat Bolton 4-1 at the Emirates. New-signing Laurent Koscielny scored on his Emirates debut to put the Gunners in front, but a defensive error from him saw Johan Elmander equalise for Bolton. Marouane Chamakh put Arsenal back in front, which was followed by a straight red card to Bolton’s Gary Cahill. Alex Song and Carlos Vela added to Arsenal’s tally.
Blackpool secured their second away win of the season as they beat Newcastle 2-0 at St James’ Park. The Tangerines have goalkeeper Matt Gilks to thank after he had a tremendous game to keep out the opposition. A surprise win maybe, but Blackpool will be delighted with the result, with goals from captain Charlie Adam and DJ Campbell.
Manchester City dropped more points, this time at home to Blackburn Rovers. Nikola Kalinic gave Blackburn the lead before Patrick Vieira put City level.
Tottenham Hotspur could only draw at West Bromwich Albion. The away side went one-nil up courtesy of Luka Modric, but were pegged back by Chris Brunt for a share of the spoils.
Sunderland’s £13million record-signing Asamoah Gyan thought he had scored the winner for Sunderland on his Premier League debut, but Wigan found a goal through Antolin Alcaraz four minutes before full time to salvage a point.
There was also late drama at Craven Cottage for Fulham, as Moussa Dembele scored twice to give them three points against Wolverhampton Wanderers. His goal in stoppage time completed the comeback after the away side went a goal up through Jelle van Damme.
