Chelsea striker Didier Drogba suffered a serious injury on Saturday in the English Premier League fixture against Norwich City at Stamford Bridge. The 33-year-old Ivory Coast international had to be taken to the hospital as the Blues secured all three points
with a 3-1 win over a ten man Norwich City side.
The incident occurred with Drogba collided with Norwich City goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Ruddy-c18892 and was knocked out. The medical team rushed to his assistance and after seven minutes of on pitch treatment, the Ivorian forward was taken off on a stretcher.
The Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas was as worried as anyone else and revealed that after being taken to the hospital Drogba had remained unconscious “for quite some time.” It was later revealed that Drogba had suffered a concussion as a result of the collision.
The Portuguese manager said that they were waiting on further results, but were hopeful that there was nothing wrong with the Blues hit-man. Villas-Boas revealed that Drogba had already shown signs of improvement.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“We are just waiting for the full exams on his concussion and hopefully nothing is wrong.
He is showing some good signs of recovery for us to be a little bit more tranquil.”
Villas-Boas did not feel the Norwich stopper had been at fault, but admitted the incident had been very worrying. The strong Ivorian striker, who does not usually get knocked out, had lost consciousness even before he hit the ground.
Villas-Boas said:
“It looked pretty nasty.
He lost consciousness completely on the pitch.”
He continued:
“I have to be very, very grateful, not only to my players but to the Norwich players and to my medical staff for reacting so quickly to a potentially dangerous situation.”
Villas-Boas praised the quick reaction of the players of the field and the medical team, who were on the pitch shortly after the incident. After attempting to get Drogba conscious, they decided to stretcher him off when they failed to get a response.
The extent of his injury is not yet certain and once it is determined the Blues are expected to release a statement on Drogba’s availability for the upcoming matches. Luckily for Chelsea, the international break is coming up, giving Drogba time to recover.
