Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas defends http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ashley-Cole-c6809’s tackle on Javier Hernandez after 3-1 loss to Manchester United
Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas spoke in support of defender Ashley Cole who was given a yellow card after his tackle on Manchester United forward Javier Hernandez. The Blues travelled to Old Trafford on Sunday to take on the Premier League champions and
in a highly explosive match suffered a 3-1 defeat. Chris Smalling, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 scored the consolation goal for the Blues.
After the match, Manchester United manager Sir http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 defender for his harsh tackle on the Mexican striker, claiming he should have been sent off. The extent of the injury sustained by Hernandez is not yet clear, but Ferguson
stands the risk of losing the 23-year-old to a long-term injury shortly after losing midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Tom-Cleverley-c35218 for over a month.
However, Villas-Boas did not think the Blues left-back was to blame and felt that Cole would not have made the rash tackle had the referee not given away an offside goal to the Red Devils earlier. Even though http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chris-c9006 Smalling was clearly offside when he found
the back of the net, the goal was given, giving Manchester United an unfair advantage earlier on in the game.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“Maybe he wouldn't get sent off if the linesman does his work. He would have been less emotionally drained.
I work the other way round. You are trying to say the referee did something wrong. I cannot forget the previous two.”
He continued:
“If it was 0-0 maybe Ashley is a little bit more mentally in control of the situation and doesn't do the red card foul that you mention.”
The loss to Manchester United means Chelsea are now five points behind the league leaders early on in the season, but Villas-Boas revealed he was not too concerned with the result on Sunday. With the rest of the season remaining, the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss
was confident his side would improve, especially with the Premier League having proved to be extremely unpredictable.
The Portuguese manager said:
“As I said before, nothing that happened here would mean anything in the Premier League table. It is an unexpected league.”
Even though Manchester City and Liverpool were active in the summer transfer window; brining in new signings, they failed to win in their respective fixtures over the weekend. While Manchester City were held to a 2-2 draw with Fulham, a nine man Liverpool
lost 4-0 to Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane. It was for this reason that Villas-Boas refused to rule any of the top five teams out of the title race.
He added:
“Manchester City have the most amazing squad as well, but they didn't win. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 lost.
All of the five contenders are there. Anything can happen.”
