Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas has faith in the old stars at Stamford Bridge
Andre Villas-Boas, the new Chelsea manager, has revealed that he intends to continue on with the existing players at the London club. Even before his arrival at Stamford Bridge, there was speculation linking most of the senior players at the club with an exit in the summer transfer window.
The Blues did incredibly well under former manager Carlo Ancelotti during his first season at the club, winning the domestic double of the English Premier League and the FA Cup. However, they failed to secure any silverware in the second season under the Italian manager.
Ancelotti paid for his failure to deliver any silverware, facing the axe a few minutes after his last English Premier League match of last season against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Everton-c13019. It was expected many of the older players would be following the former AC Milan.
However, the arrival of the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 manager Ander Villas-Boas has brought an unexpected announcement with it. The young Portuguese manager has claimed he has no plans of offloading the old talent at Stamford Bridge in the current transfer window.
The likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 were all linked with a move away. They are all past the 30-year-old mark and would be considered a liability by many.
To make room for the many new names Chelsea have been linked with over the summer, Villas-Boas was expected to offload the above mentioned players. The Portuguese manager stated recently that he would do no such thing.
Villas-Boas said in an interview:
“These players still have a lot of offer. Just look at the trophies they have won and how successful they have been.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 are the second or third-oldest team in the Premier League and I must respect the recovery periods of the older players.
So I must find the correct balance between experience and youth, and find out what kind of game we can play.”
Villas-Boas did however make it clear that he would also be making some signings in the summer, preferably young stars. The Portuguese manager felt it was important to maintain a balance in the squad, which would ensure success in the upcoming season.
With the guarantee that the likes of Drogba, Anelka and Malouda would be continuing on with the Blues, Villas-Boas has his sights set on some of Europe’s highest rated youngsters. Having already signed http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Javier-Pastore-c18082.
The Blues need for midfielder was increased when first choice holding midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 picked up a long-term knee injury. The 28-year-old Ghanaian international is expected to be out for at least six months after undergoing surgery on his knee.
It is for that reason that Villas-Boas has had to step up his efforts to find replacements for Essien, with the Blues still hoping to acquire the services of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707.
Negotiations with Tottenham are still dragging on, but in case they are unable to secure the services of the 25-year-old midfielder, Villas-Boas has other players identified. With about a month remaining of the transfer window, there is plenty of time for the Blues to bring in new, younger players to balance out the older players at the club.
