Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas said he believed striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Anelka-c27786 would be leaving the London side at the end of the season. The 32-year-old French forward will be out of contract with the Blues in the summer and according to the manager has made
no efforts to renew his contract.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“It might not be the player's expectancy to renew.”
Anelka joined Chelsea in the summer of 2008 for a fee of £15 million from Bolton Wanderers, getting off to a disappointing start with the Blues; scoring just twice in 24 appearances that season. However, he did much better the next season, making 54 appearances
and finding the back of the net 25 times.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 international has managed to become somewhat of a regular since then, making 44 and 45 appearances in the following seasons, scoring 15 and 16 goals respectively. However, under Carlo Ancelotti’s last season at the club it became uncertain
whether Anelka had a future with the Blues.
Even though Villas-Boas did not offload the French striker as he was expected to when he took charge of the club in the summer, the Portuguese manager revealed Anelka had expressed his desire to leave the London club at the end of the season, which is why
there have been no talks of a new contract.
Villas-Boas continued:
“Nico as a person is very, very happy, he belongs to Chelsea in the last year of his contract, performing.
We will make our efforts for him to renew but Nico has his own decision to make and I am not sure he will be willing.”
Anelka has done well under Villas-Boas since the beginning of the new campaign, being chosen over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 in the Premier League and has done well in the UEFA Champions League. However, he doesn’t seem to want to stay at Stamford Bridge when he runs
out of contract with Chelsea after this season.
Anelka’s possible departure raised questions of whether or not Didier Drogba, the 33-year-old Ivory Coast international, would be offered a new contract. Villas-Boas remained quite over a new deal for Drogba, saying it was too early to comment on.
He revealed:
“I would not like to share it with you as you would speculate with it for the rest of the season.”
