Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is currently recovering from a head injury he suffered during the Blues’ last English Premier League fixture against West Bromwich Albion. The London side managed a convincing 3-1 win at Stamford Bridge before the international
break, but will now be without 33-year-old Ivory Coast international for when they face Sunderland over the weekend.
In fact, it is not entirely certain when Drogba will be returning for the Blues. Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas confirmed that while Drogba was out of the trip to Sunderland and the UEFA Champions League fixture against Bayer Leverkusen, he could be back
to face Manchester United. However, the Portuguese manager revealed that his availability for the trip to Old Trafford depended on his recovery.
After rest over the international break, Drogba has been cleared by the medical team to resume training with the rest of the squad. However, the Chelsea physiotherapists are still paying close attention to Drogba and his progress. The Blues manager said
he was hoping to have the striker back in the squad for the trip to Manchester United but did not want to push him for an early return.
Villas-Boas said in an interview:
“He has to be authorised medically to make his full return to training. He has been doing light sessions, of course, with our physios.
Let's push it to the limit to try for him to be available for Man United. I wouldn't say he would be available for Leverkusen.”
Andre Villas-Boas admitted that Drogba had been in terrible pain after the incident because of which he had received constant supervision from the medical team at the club. In addition to that, the Portuguese manager revealed his friends and family had been
crucial in his recovery. The striker has improved drastically and has made much progress over the past week.
Villas-Boas said:
“The first days were, of course, tremendous pain, and he had his family supporting him. He had complete support from the medical staff, who were with him 24-seven.”
He continued:
“We just have to make sure that he's fully recovered before he comes back to training because that's the requirement you have to do neurologically.”
