Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas urges team to be fluent, praises newcomer Juan Mata
New Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas revealed he expected the team to improve once the UEFA Champions League fixtures started. The Portuguese manager predicted a “fluency” in the teams play when they were playing in Europe along with the English Premier
League. The Blues have not managed to impress since the beginning of the new season, drawing their opening fixture and securing unconvincing wins in their next two matches.
While Chelsea were held at a 0-0 draw at Stoke City on the opening day of the English Premier League, they managed to defeat West Bromwich Albion 2-1 and on Saturday beat newly promoted Norwich City 3-1. Despite the unbeaten start, the Blues do not seem
too impressive when compared to the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City, both of whom have gone on to win all their fixtures with very convincing performances.
However, Villas-Boas was confident the Blues would only improve with the increased number of games. Chelsea are scheduled to face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the English Premier League, Bayer Leverkusen in the group stages of the Champions League
before travelling to Old Trafford to take on the Premier League champion in the days following the international break. He was certain playing twice a week instead of once would make a difference in consistency.
Villas-Boas said while speaking to reporters:
“When the midweek games start coming in, it will help with the fluency of our game, because you play the games more often and you get more of a relationship between players.
The quality of the game will improve and that's what we want straight away, to find that fluency.”
The new arrival from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863, Juan Mata, made a big difference for the Blues on his debut. The 23-year-old winger came on as a substitute and apart from his overall contribution, found the back of the net in stoppage time. Villas-Boas revealed he was pleased
with Mata’s performance and contribution, which showed how the Blues were lacking width and creativity. The Portuguese manager was pleased with how well the team had performed with Mata, despite the fact that it had been his first appearance for them.
Villas-Boas said:
“Mata found some good spaces.
Also, the team helped him find these spaces.”
Villas-Boas was forced to make substitutions sooner than he wanted to after http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Anelka-c27786 in place of the 33-year-old Ivorian striker and he revealed he was
pleased with how well the squad reacted to the change. Unlike the team that former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 boss Carlo Ancelotti fielded, Villas-Boas has brought with him a flexibility that was previously missing and will definitely benefit the team.
The Portuguese boss revealed:
“It's good that we have this flexibility.
Teams are criticised when they don't offer this flexibility.
We have that and we are able to perform with all of these structures.”
