Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti feels Fernando Torres and David Luiz should have been signed in the summer
Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti admitted the arrival of striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 during the January transfer window could have been better timed.
The pair arrived at Stamford Bridge during the winter transfer window for a combined fee of £73 million, but failed to make an impact on the Blues season.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 made a sensational start to the season, retaining their position at the top of the Premier League and doing well in the cup competitions.
However, they suffered their worst slump in over 15 years, after which they did not quite recover. The Blues owner allowed Ancelotti to buy players in the winter transfer window, in hopes the new arrivals would be enough to revive the squad.
Unfortunately, they did not quite have the effect expected of them. While 23-year-old Luiz was a relative success, quickly earning a place in the first team, the same cannot be said about Torres.
The 27-year-old Spaniard failed to live up to the hype created about his transfer to Chelsea from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809, going 903 minutes before scoring his first goal for Chelsea.
The Italian manager revealed the arrival of both the players in the summer would have been better suited for both the club and the players themselves.
Ancelotti said while speaking to reporters, “Obviously, if we'd been able to buy Torres and David Luiz in the summer, it would have been easier for them.”
Having been a player himself, the former AC Milan boss admitted it was difficult to adjust to a new club in such a short period of time.
He continued, “It's not always easy to play well immediately if you arrive in January. But we were not able to do this because Liverpool and Benfica wanted to start the season with these players.”
Ancelotti also touched upon the sensitive subject of playing Torres alongside 33-year-old Ivory Coast hit-man http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044.
The two have failed to strike up a successful partnership and Ancelotti’s various attempts to rearrange the team to suit the strikers better have failed.
He revealed he would have been able to accommodate both the world class strikers in the first team, had he been given more time.
The Italian manager said, “Obviously, to play Fernando and Drogba, you need to change the position of the midfielders a bit, and we've had not had time to change our philosophy [midway through a season]. That is something you can cope with ahead of a new
season.”
The arrival of Torres and Luiz interfered with the Blues resurgence and late title challenge, if anything. It’s not the only, but one of the many reasons why Chelsea will end up without a trophy this season.
However, Ancelotti revealed he was confident the two players would do well in the next season, having more time available to adjust to the London side.
