Di Matteo would have preferably wanted his entire squad to be present for the pre-season training and tour, but will now have to do without the four young players, that is if http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-Sturridge-c10076 is declared fit in time for the Olympics.
Di Matteo said while speaking to reporters:
“As a manager, you would like to have them with you in pre-season, but it is the Olympic Games and players will want to be involved with it.
It is a great opportunity for the players to be involved in the Olympic team, one that the players do not want to lose out on.”
However, the Italian manager felt it was a great opportunity for the players to gain the much needed experience to play on the international stage. He said he hoped the Chelsea players would make the most out of the situation and return to the club enriched
with experience.
With the European Championships having just concluded and the Olympics about to begin, the entire Chelsea squad will be able to regroup in late July or early August. Roberto Di Matteo was hopeful that the delay in the players regrouping would not adversely
affect their season.
He said:
“It is a bit disrupted by the European Championship and the Olympics, and it will be towards the end of July or the beginning of August before we have the whole squad together.”
While Daniel Sturridge, Ryan Bertrand and Oriol Romeu did not make it to their teams for the European Championships, Mata did. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder will be participating in both the competitions and might be given some extra time off before
he is asked to join up with the squad.
Di Matteo revealed:
“We will have to see with Mata, because he was at the Euro champs as well.”
