Chelsea boss says Frank Lampard is set to make return
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti says that Frank Lampard is on the verge of making a comeback and is set to feature in the English Premier League match against Sunderland on Sunday, 14 November.
The 32-year-old has been out of action since undergoing a hernia operation at the start of September. While he had recovered from the surgery, the midfielder picked up a groin injury that has kept him on the sidelines.
However, the England international has finally returned to training and his manager revealed that he could be pitched in against the Black Cats at Stamford Bridge.
'Lampard is showing confidence'
Ancelotti told reporters that: "I think he'll be okay for Sunday. He started to train two days ago with the team.
"He doesn't have a problem, is showing confidence. I hope he will be ready, not necessarily to play for 90 minutes but just to be involved in the squad. If he's okay, he can start. I don't think he will be able to play 90 minutes, but he can play part of the
game — he can do that."
The return of the midfield stalwart will go some way towards fixing Ancelotti’s selection problems in the middle of the pitch. Michael Essien will be suspended after he was sent off in the 1-0 win over Fulham on Wednesday, while Yossi Benayoun is out with a
long-term Achilles injury.
Since moving to Chelsea from West Ham United in 2001, Lampard has established himself as an important player for his club.
He has been at the heartbeat of a Chelsea side which has won the EPL title three times in the last seven seasons and has also claimed three FA Cups, two Football League Cups and a pair of FA Community Shields. He played a key role in helping Chelsea reach the
2008 UEFA Champions League final.
Lampard was also runner-up in the voting for the 2005 FIFA World Player of the Year award.
