http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 captain John Terry confident striker Fernando Torres will regain his form next season
Chelsea and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Andriy-Shevchenko-c6014. The 27-year-old earned comparisons to the Ukrainian forward after finding the back of
the net just once in 18 appearances for the Blues last season after signing with them in the January transfer window.
Torres arrived at Stamford Bridge from English Premier League rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 for a record breaking fee of £50 million. However, despite the hype created by the media and the expectations harboured by supporters over his move to Chelsea, the Spaniard failed
to make an impact. This reminded everyone of Shevchenko, who had in his time been the most expensive Chelsea player proving to be a flop.
Terry did not think Torres would end up like the former AC Milan and insisted the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 international needed more time to improve and adjust to his new side. The central defender revealed Torres had not been fully fit when he had arrived at the London club,
having picked up an injury during the 2010 World Cup in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757, from which he had not entirely recovered.
Terry said in an interview:
“When he started last season with Liverpool, he was very open about the injury he picked up at the World Cup.
Right now we are all 85-90 per cent with our fitness, and so is he, but we will keep on working.”
Terry was glad to disclose that the former Liverpool striker was close to full fitness, having worked on it with the Blues during the summer. According to the Blues captain, Torres would be fully fit in time for the new campaign, where the Blues would attempt
to reclaim the English Premier League title from rivals Manchester United.
One of the main reasons why Torres left Anfield to join Chelsea was the fact that the Blues were playing UEFA Champions League football and more importantly had a better chance of claiming the Premier League crown. The Reds have not yet lifted the Premier
League and going on last season, Chelsea are definitely favourites to challenge Manchester United for the trophy.
Terry said:
“Naturally, there is pressure on him but he can deal with it. He is one of the best strikers in the world, after all.
He is hungry. He wants to win the Premier League and that was the first thing he spoke about when he joined us in January.”
The Chelsea captain said the striker was under pressure to perform, which could very well be the reason he was unable to do so. However, he remained confident the new campaign would bring out the best in the Spanish World Cup winning striker.
