Chelsea chairman unsure over Luka Modric, confirms Andre Villas-Boas’ Premier League aim
Chelsea chairman Bruce Buck revealed he was not sure if the club would still pursue Tottenham Hotspur midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857, with the Blues having already had two of their bids rejected. It was thought the Blues would make an improved third bid in hopes
of landing the 25-year-old Croatian midfielder, but they have reportedly not approached Tottenham Hotspur with a third bid.
Buck said in an interview:
“We did make an offer, (Tottenham chairman) http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy has rejected that offer and I don't know if it will go any further, we will have to see.”
Buck felt the new http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 manager Andre Villas-Boas might have decided to focus on his other targets, after Tottenham Hotspur had rejected the second improved bid of £27 million. The Blues might not be willing to spend the expected £35 million for the services
of Modric, and the most they offer is suspected to be £30 million.
Despite claiming to be happy with the existing squad at Stamford Bridge, Villas-Boas is looking to bring in more players. The young Portuguese manager confirmed he was indeed considering new signings after the goalless draw at the Britannia Stadium against
Stoke City on the opening day of the new English Premier League season.
Buck revealed the former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 had not exactly handed the management a list of players he wanted, as most managers do, but had communicated to them where he felt the team could use some improvement. The Blues’ chairman revealed the possible new signings
depended on the availability of players and the amount of time negotiations would take to secure the deal.
He continued:
“Andre didn’t give us a shopping list but he did tell us where he thought we could improve.”
Buck insisted the Blues’ main priority was the English Premier League title, despite popular belief that they were desperate to claim the UEFA Champions League. The Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is known to be obsessed with the European Cup, since that
is the one trophy his side have not yet been able to get their hands on.
However, Buck confirmed what Villas-Boas had previously stated; the need to reclaim the Premier League crown from Manchester United was a much higher priority than winning the coveted Champions League this season. The Blues boss had made it very clear that
he wished to win the Premier League title in his first season at the club.
Buck revealed:
“Andre says that the Premier League is really what he is looking for and that is the one that I always look at because it is a gruelling season and, by and large, the best team wins.
With the Champions League a lot depends on the draw and other factors so there is a little bit of luck involved, which isn't the case in the Premier League.”
