Ron Gourlay, the Chelsea chief executive, has revealed he believes Fernando Torres can successfully replace Didier Drogba as the main striker at the club.
After eight years at the London club Didier Drogba said his farewell to the fans after helping them to the UEFA Champions League for the very first time. The Ivory Coast international scored the equalizer to give his side a life line and then scored the
winning penalty in the penalty shoot-out.
As things stand there is no comparison between http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 and Fernando Torres. Drogba has made 341 appearances in all competitions for the Blues, with 157 goals and 71 assists and he is considered to be one of the best strikers the club has had.
Torres on the other hand transferred to Stamford Bridge from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 for a fee of 50 million pounds, but so far has failed to deliver. In 64 appearances in all competitions, Torres has only 12 goals and 14 assists but he will now be expected to step up
since Drogba has left.
Gourlay said in an interview:
“We've got Fernando Torres. And Fernando Torres is the man that we will go forward with and Fernando Torres will score us the goals. Have no doubt that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 is a world-class centre-forward and Fernando Torres will score goals for Chelsea.
I'm not worried at all. We've just won the Champions League and Fernando Torres played his part in that.”
It will be a tough transition for the club and the striker, since he will be expected to play a more central role and Chelsea will have to adjust to a future without Drogba. However, Gourlay admitted there was a big chance the club could go on to bring in
some new faces.
He revealed:
“We may have two big-name centre-forwards scoring 25-30 goals for us next season and maybe then we will improve on our sixth position in the league.”
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hulk-c16436 as possible signings in the summer transfer window. However, the London club are yet to make an official offer for the players.
