Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay certain striker Didier Drogba will stay at Stamford Bridge
The Chelsea chief executive Ron Gourlay said he did not think Blues star striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044 was leaving the London club during the summer transfer window.
Gourlay insisted the 33-year-old Ivory Coast international was an important part of the Chelsea squad and had a future at the club next season.
Gourlay said while speaking to reporters:
“Didier is very much a mainstay of the Chelsea team so yes, Didier will be here with us in a few weeks' time.”
Recently there have been rumours linking Drogba to a move to London rivals, Tottenham Hotspur in an exchange deal for Spurs midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857.
The Blues have been keeping a close watch on the 25-year-old Croatian midfielder and are currently favourites to sign him.
However, Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp does not seem to be willing to sell his star midfielder and has made this very clear.
It is suspected that offering Drogba in an exchange deal could help change Redknapp’s mind about letting Modric leave White Hart Lane.
Redknapp has made no secret of his admiration of the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 striker and could be tempted by the possible offer by the Blues.
However, according to the recent statement made by the Blues chief executive, Chelsea have no intention of parting ways with Drogba.
With £50 million January transfer window arrival http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-Torres-c13707 proving to be a flop, Chelsea have decided to keep Drogba for at least another season.
The Blues reportedly held talks with the striker and offered him an improved contract, which he has not yet accepted.
Attempting to put a disappointing season behind them, the Blues will need all the help they can get and at this point they need Didier Drogba.
While they are targeting summer signings, none of the new arrivals can be expected to replace the Ivorian, who has been a regular since his arrival in 2004.
However, the Chelsea chief executive revealed he was confident the Blues would bounce back next season, he said:
“Our target is very much to be back competing. Last year was a difficult year, of course.
However, that's history now. We will move on. We expect to be competing for all the major trophies next season.”
Last season Chelsea failed to secure any silverware despite getting off to a good start, as a result of which manager Carlo Ancelotti was sacked.
They have yet to find a replacement for the Italian manager, after which they will be able to make new signings.
While the situation at the London club seems very dreary at the moment, Gourlay was certain things would improve.
He continued:
“Let's not get too despondent. I'm sure a club like ours will bounce back very, very strongly this coming season.”
