Chelsea defender returns to Wolverhampton Wanderers on loan
English Premier League giants Chelsea have once again farmed out utility man Michael Mancienne on loan to Wolverhampton Wanderers, it was announced today.
The 22-year-old, who can operate in midfield or anywhere across the defence, has joined Mick McCarthy’s team for a third time after signing a season-long loan deal. The England Under-21 international has gone straight into training ahead of the clash with Newcastle United in the EPL on Saturday.
Mancienne today told the Wolves’ official website of his delight at being back at the club. He said that: "I'm really happy to be back. In a way it feels like I'm coming back home anyway and I'm really looking forward to the season. It didn't look like anything was going to happen with Chelsea and I didn't really want to sit and wait for a chance — I want to play games. Wolves have been very good to me in the past and I'm delighted to be back.”
He first joined Wolves in October 2008 for two months, and made 10 appearances as he helped the club gain promotion from the Football League Championship to the EPL. Mancienne rejoined the team and spent the 2009-10 campaign with the side, making 33 appearances as his versatility was used to strong effect while he helped to keep Wolves in the EPL.
With the England Under-21 team, he has made 21 appearances and has scored once. Mancienne was called up to Fabio Capello’s senior England squad for a friendly match against Germany in November 2008, but did not play any part in the match.
Mancienne’s deal with Chelsea runs for another three years. He has been with his parent club for his entire career since joining as a youth player in 1996 and also enjoyed a lengthy spell on loan at Queens Park Rangers.
