Chelsea goal keeper Petr Cech revealed the Blues were still attempting to recover from having lost the title to Manchester United this season. The London side ended up trophy less this season, just a season after having won the domestic double.
Chelsea suffered a mid-season slump, their worst in over 15 years, which cost them their spot at the top of the Premier League table, along with the chance to claim any other trophy.
The Blues were eliminated from the Carling Cup and FA Cup early on in the season and faced a quarter-final exit from the UEFA Champions League.
They did however recover from their poor form towards the end of the season to present league leaders Manchester United with a late title challenge.
Unfortunately, that’s all that was, a late title challenge. It was ultimately down to the third last game in the season, with Chelsea playing United at Old Trafford.
A win would have seen Chelsea go top of the table, level on points with Manchester United. However, the Blues lost 2-1 and were reduced to a second place finish.
The Chelsea number one admitted it was a great disappointment to finish the season without any silverware and to surrender the Premier League crown to the Red Devils.
Cech said while speaking to reporters, “It seemed to me that in each of us there was still disappointment from not winning the title, as on Saturday Manchester United captured it.”
Chelsea’s last home game was against Newcastle United and the Blues were desperate to give their fans a win at Stamford Bridge.
The game did not quite go the way the Blues had planned, with Newcastle putting up a brilliant performance. The match ended in an exciting 2-2 draw.
The Chelsea number one admitted the disappointment his side faced when they drew against Newcastle last weekend, he said, “We wanted badly to win the last match of the season at Stamford Bridge and conceding in the last minute is not the best way to reward
our fans, who have supported us all year.”
However, he said he felt it was an appropriate end to the disappointing season, Cech continued, “It somehow sums up our season in the way that there was always something missing for us to finish the job.”
Chelsea finish the season at second place, the only positive they can take from this season is that they have a guaranteed place in next season’s Champions League.
