Chelsea goalkeeper revealed he considered it an honour to wear the captain’s armband in the absence of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 and Frank Lampard in the UEFA Champions League fixture in mid-week. With the Blues’ manager Andre Villas-Boas deciding to rest Terry and Lampard
for the Manchester United match over the weekend, Cech was named captain against Bayer Leverkusen.
The 29-year-old felt privileged to lead the Blues at Stamford Bridge against the Bundesliga side, in a match that ended in a 2-0 Chelsea win. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542 and Juan Mata scored to award Chelsea the win, with Cech doing well to keep a clean sheet. The Czech
Republic international did well in his first competitive fixture as captain, having previously been given the armband in a friendly against Crystal Palace.
Cech said on his official website:
“I take it as a huge reward for my services. It is a big privilege to be the captain of one of the world's best football clubs, especially in the Champions League.
It could not have come out better. I saved two chances and we won 2-0. It was a perfect game with all that it involves.”
Cech joined Chelsea in the 2004-2005 season and replaced former first choice goalkeeper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carlo-Cudicini-c8340 in his first season at the London club. He has remained the first team stopper for the Blues over the years and has made a total of 311 appearances in
all competitions. A senior member of the squad, he is an obvious choice to captain the side in the absence of John Terry, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Didier-Drogba-c11044.
Cech was extremely pleased with his side’s win during midweek and was hopeful of repeating their success over the weekend. Chelsea face Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford and will go into the match as underdogs. However, the Blues stopper felt the
win in their opening fixture in the Champions League gave them confidence going into the match against the Red Devils.
He continued:
“It was an important start into the competition and I rate this win high because Leverkusen were an unpleasant opposition.
But we won and kept a clean sheet. It is positive and will certainly boost our confidence ahead of Sunday's clash against Manchester United.”
