Petr Cech, the Chelsea first team goalkeeper, revealed he was impressed with striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fernando-c13609 Torres’ performance against Stoke City in the opening fixture of the new English Premier League season. Even though the Spaniard failed to find the back of the
net, he looked much sharper and focused than he had last season.
Cech was certain it was only a matter of time before the 27-year-old returned to his goal-scoring ways and made a difference for the Blues in the new season. Torres arrived at Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window of last season for a record breaking
fee of £50 million from Premier League rivals http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809.
Despite the high profile transfer, Torres failed to make an impact in the latter half of last season and only found the back of the net once. However, in his first full season with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, Torres has shown a lot of improvement. This has earned him praise
from both fans and critics, with the Blues’ stopper being the latest to praise Torres’ revival.
The 29-year-old Chelsea keeper admitted the pressure had only made things worse for Torres, who had failed to perform at Stamford Bridge up until now. Cech said it had taken the Spain international some time getting used to the London club after his move
from Liverpool, and this had undoubtedly slowed down his progress at his new club.
Cech said while speaking to reporters:
“It has made a huge difference that he had a pre-season with us.
Sometimes when you come for such a huge amount of money to a different team and city everything changes and there is a lot of pressure.”
However, Torres showed a huge improvement against Stoke City over the weekend as he selected to start in attack by new Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas. The 4-3-3 formation suited the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 striker well, as he was presented with countless chances to give his
side a lead. While he was exceptional, there was something missing from the Blues’ squad and they failed to come out as winners.
Cech continued:
“He had a really good game against Stoke and he deserved to get a goal.
He was close on a few occasions; he created space and chances for the others.
I thought Fernando was brilliant up front and it was just a pity we did not convert our chances.”
Unfortunately for Chelsea, the match ended a goalless draw and the London side took just one point where they needed all three. However, the obvious improvement in Torres’ form will give the team hope of better results in the future. Apart from Torres, the
Blues have an excess of strikers, with the likes of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Romelu-Lukaku-c31672 among other attacking players.
Though they have earned criticism for having too many strikers, Cech felt it could prove to be the difference between Chelsea and the other side’s at the end of the season. With the Blues aiming to compete in every competition, they could definitely use
the host of strikers present at the club, especially in the case of one or more failing to deliver.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Czech-Republic-c2882 international said:
“Having so many good strikers will definitely make a difference.
The season is very long and we want to compete in every competition.”
Lastly, Chelsea usually miss some of the strikers during the African Cup of Nations which takes place every year. With some crucial players away for international duty, the Blues will need all the help they can get to ensure they do not suffer another mid-season
slump like last season. Despite having too many players already, Villas-Boas is rumoured to be considering bringing in more players; a playmaker.
