Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech questions Liverpool’s ambitions
Chelsea goalkeeper has become the latest player to pick on Liverpool’s dire start to the new club football season as the Reds have showcased a massive dip in form. Liverpool appointed Roy Hodgson as their new manager in the summer transfer window and since
then the club has gone downhill. A lot of blame has been pointed at Hodgson but Liverpool’s players have also performed below their potential thus far. Liverpool next face Chelsea on the weekend and the Reds will be aiming for their third consecutive win as
they defeated Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers in their last two English Premier League matches.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper spoke about the rivalry between Liverpool and Chelsea as he said, “If Liverpool really want to show that they want to compete for finishing in the top four then they need to start winning games and winning games against the strong teams.
They have the first possibility against us but we go there top of the league and we want to be in the same position after the game. They still have a very good squad and they still have the qualities to challenge for fourth or to finish in the top four, of
course, when you have such a bad start to the season everything becomes more difficult and they will have to chase all the way.”
Cech praised Pepe Reina, Liverpool’s goalkeeper in his comments. Pepe has been Liverpool’s most consistent performer over the past three years but now his future is clouded in doubt as the Spanish goalie is the subject of a move away from Anfield in the
January transfer window. Petr Cech spoke about Pepe’s ability as he said, "I think he was the reason why they were successful or they finished third and in the top four always. Since Pepe came to Liverpool in 2005, he’s been brilliant for them and I think
he’s one of the reasons why they are solid at the back and they can rely on him.”
Cech admitted the fact that Liverpool’s ownership troubles that were eventually resolved in court became a source of distraction for the players. Something that worked adversely as far as the club’s goals to secure a high finish in the English Premier League
are concerned. “I think there are a lot of things off the pitch and on the pitch, so it’s for them to work on them. In the last few games, they’ve been playing quite well. They won [away to Bolton Wanderers] and I think they have something to build from.”
The Czech Republic goalkeeper also commented on Chelsea’s success this season which has led them to qualify for the knockout stages of UEFA Champions League with their two group stage matches remaining. The Blues have been on fire in the 2010-2011 season
with Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka alongside Florent Malouda firing on all cylinders. Cech told the press, “This season it has helped us to be first in the Premier League. We have a five-point advantage over the second team, so I think this is the most
pleasing thing about it.”
Chelsea are currently at the top of English Premier League table and are also the favourites to win the UEFA Champions League.  It all remains to be seen how the rest of the season will unfold for the present English champions but Chelsea do look immensely
strong at this moment in time.
