Chelsea lead race for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Luka Modric, offer £130,000-a-week deal
Recent reports reveal English Premier League side Chelsea are preparing a bid for London rivals Tottenham Hotspur midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857.
The 25-year-old Croatian international has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane during the transfer window.
So far the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid have been known to be keeping a close watch on the Spurs midfielder.
However, the Blues seem to have emerged as favourites to sign Modric. They are reportedly willing to pay as much as £130,000-a-week in order to lure him away from Tottenham Hotspur.
With the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international currently on a £50,000-a-week deal with the Spurs, the amount offered by Chelsea will seem very attractive.
After a particularly disappointing season Chelsea are looking to freshen up their squad, and Modric seems to fit their requirements.
The £15 million rated player is a highly creative midfielder, who flourishes at the left wing but manages perfectly well as an attacking and holding midfielder.
His versatility and top form for the Spurs in the past season have made him one of the most sought after players in this transfer window.
After six years in the Croatian first division, Modric transferred to White Hart Lane for a fee of £16.5 million in the summer of 2008.
Having stayed with the Spurs for three seasons, Modric has managed to remain consistent in terms of appearances made and goals scored.
Modric went on to make 44 appearances for the Spurs under manager Juande Ramos, and found the back of the net five times.
During that time Modric was used as a holding midfielder, not his forte, which affected his performance since he was not being utilized to his full potential.
After Harry Redknapp took over the manager’s post at Tottenham, Modric has done really well and has ultimately established himself as an irreplaceable part of the Spurs squad.
Now their big spending London rivals have their sights set on him and are determined to sign him regardless of the price tag.
A source close to the club revealed:
“Not having a manager yet won't slow anything down.
There's a hit list of players to sign and Modric is right at the top of it.”
If that is indeed the case, then Modric will most likely end up at Stamford Bridge because what Chelsea want, Chelsea get.
However, the Blues will have to wait until they can sign the Croatian international, since they are currently without a manager.
Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti was sacked at the end of the season and so far http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 have not found a replacement.
Guus Hiddink is currently the favourite to take over the manager’s post at the London club, but there has been no confirmation as yet.
