Chelsea are set to appoint Porto Coach Andre Villas-Boas as their latest manager and have matched the €15 million buyout clause in his contract.
Villas-Boas was one of the prime candidates for the hot seat at Stamford Bridge after the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti. His experience of working as an assistant manager at Chelsea under Jose Mourinho and his track record makes him the ideal man for the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Job-c18684.
Although neither club has made a formal announcement of the ongoing negotiations, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 issued a statement to the stock exchange.
“Futebol Clube do Porto, SAD, at the request of CMVM, come to inform the market that coach Andre Villas-Boas, just like several players in the squad, has a release clause,” the statement read.
“Up to this date, this society has not yet received any information that this clause would be triggered.”
Villa-Boas started his managerial career after the late Sir Bobby Robson convinced him to earn his coaching badges. After finishing with his course, he had a brief stint with the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/British-Virgin-Islands-c2859 team before leaving to become Mourinho’s assistant at
Estadio do Dragao.
After hauling unprecedented silverware with the Dragons, Mourinho and Villas-Boas departed for Chelsea and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 to manage
Academica.
Villas-Boas then steered the Portuguese side clear of relegation and guided them to the semi-finals of the Portuguese Cup. But his spell was cut short, as he re-signed for Porto in managerial capacity after the departure of Jesualdo http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ferreira-c13712.
His impact was immediate and he literally won every competition he entered in the campaign. With Villas-Boas in charge, the Portistas won the Portuguese Primeira Liga, Portuguese Cup, Portuguese Super Cup and the UEFA Europa League. His unbeaten run in the
Portuguese League was a new club record and was better than the previous one set by Jose Mourinho during his tenure.
With such a record, it’s no surprise that the club has placed a €15 million buyout clause on his services. But given the financial muscle of Roman Abramovich, it should be not be a stumbling block.
The only problem Villas-Boas will surely face is acquiring trophies on a consistent basis, particularly the UEFA Champions League, something which has been desired by Abramovich for a long time.
Hailed as the new ‘Special One’, his record is even better than his predecessor’s, but their fate could be the same if he doesn’t manage to win silverware. The Russian Oligarch has a notorious history of firing managers and the English giants have had the
same amount of coaches in charge in his reign as rivals Manchester United have had in the last 50 years.
