John Obi Mikel, the 24-year-old Chelsea midfielder, revealed he was looking forward to playing under new Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas. The 33-year-old former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 boss takes over from Italian manager Carlo Ancelotti who was sacked at the end of
last season.
Even though Ancelotti led the Blues to their first ever domestic double, the English Premier League and FA Cup, in his first season at the club, he was relieved of his duties as manager after failing to lead the London side to silverware in his first season
at the club.
He is replaced by Villas-Boas, who arrives at Stamford Bridge after a highly successful season with the Portuguese giants. He became the youngest manager ever to win the UEFA Europa League, along with the Primeira League, the Portuguese Cup and Portuguese
Supercup.
Nigerian midfielder Mikel was one of the few players who were unhappy under Ancelotti, having claimed he was not happy. It was mostly because of the lack of first team action that had caused the former Lyn player disappointment.
However, the arrival of Villas-Boas in the hot-seat at the Bridge has given the Blues midfielder hope ahead of the new season. According to Mikel the rest of the squad was just as happy as he was with the appointment of Villas-Boas as manager at Chelsea.
Mikel said in an interview:
“Training sessions have been going well. Everyone is in a good mood.
We're obviously all just back from our holidays but people are feeling fit and seem happy with the training and the systems we have here, so now we have to transfer it into a game.”
Mikel was hopeful the Blues would do well under the Portuguese manager, who had the squad started on intense training. While the double sessions were tough, Mikel admitted they would help prepare the team for next season.
The http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nigeria-c2970 international continued:
“The new manager has worked really hard on our sharpness and it is going very well.
The double sessions are hard but working with the ball makes it so much easier than running all the time, and it is enjoyable as well.”
Villas-Boas has made plenty of changes in his management team since taking over the manager’s post but he has yet to make any signings. The Blues now remain one of the few clubs who have yet to sign a player in the summer transfer window.
It has become a concern, especially since 28-year-old midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 sustained a knee injury that will keep him out for six months. Mikel revealed he was saddened by Essien’s injury and hoped the Ghanaian made a quick recovery.
Mikel said:
“Unfortunately, Michael Essien has been injured, and we all feel sorry for him and wish him well, and hopefully he can come back very soon.”
