Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel’s father found, SEM confirm
Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel’s father, Michael Obi, who was kidnapped last week, has been found. The player’s management company confirmed the news that the 24-year-old’s father had indeed been found almost a week after he went missing.
Michael Obi went missing on 12th August; his family reported the disappearance after he failed to return home from work. Mikel’s father runs a transport company in Nigeria and was not seen or heard from since that Friday.
His family alerted the police after he was unreachable on his cell-phone and they began their search. While they initially refused to treat it like a kidnapping, their fears were confirmed when the kidnappers called and demanded ransom.
Mikel’s brother’s confirmed they had spoken to the kidnappers along with their mother, who had begged for the safety of Michael. They heard his voice over the phone, which gave them hope that he was still alive and safe.
It is believed the kidnappers had held him in Kano, some 180 miles from the Nigerian capital, but he has now been recovered. The police have reportedly taken the abductors in custody, but have not yet released an official statement.
Mikel’s management company, SEM, on the other hand released an official statement regarding the latest development in the case. They confirmed that Mikel’s father had been released and that they were extremely pleased by the good news.
SEM said in their official statement:
“SEM are delighted to confirm that earlier today Michael Obi called his family to advise them that he had been released by his abductors.”
It continued:
