Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has invited various footballers for the upcoming Ghana XI vs World XI, a charity match to raise awareness for the conditions in war torn Africa.
The 28-year-old holding midfielder took it upon himself to organize the event, which he is certain will help raise awareness for the need of peace in the continent.
Essien revealed he expected the participation of top football stars, including his Chelsea teammates http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Florent-Malouda-c13838.
Cole and Malouda will be featuring for the World XI side, since they represent England and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/France-c2899 respectively.
The likes of Chelsea hit-man http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kolo-c21278 and Yaya Toure are also expected at the event to represent the Africa XI team.
The Ghanaian midfielder revealed he was still in the process of trying to convince other players to make an appearance at the charity game.
Chelsea and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Italy-c2926 and AC Milan defender Paolo Maldini are reportedly on Essien’s list.
The two have been contacted by Essien, but so far have failed to confirm their participation. However, there is a possibility they could make a surprise appearance today.
Essien promised an exciting event, with the arrival of many top footballers. He urged the fans to look forward to a thrilling match.
Michael Essien said while speaking to reporters,
“So the people should expect some world-class players in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905. They will see ex-players and current players, they are all coming down.”
Essien is amongst the many Africans desperate to contain and eventually finish the civil war that’s threatening the existence of countries affected by it.
Ivory Coast and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Libya-c2942 are currently the countries suffering from the continuing effects of civil war, despite intervention from outside forces.
According to Essien the football http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Charity-c38784 event would not only help raise awareness about the issues, but also funds to help the people influenced by the war.
He continued:
"We just want to raise awareness about peace in Africa and, hopefully, we can generate funds for African Union projects.
"Football is a very big thing in Africa; people http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Love-c22466 football, so it's always good to deliver the message through football.
Hopefully, this game will help to bring peace in Africa because if you look at what has happened in Ivory Coast and Libya, it's not good. It's time for Africa to stand up and make peace with each other, stop the fighting, put the guns down and love each other.”
The match is scheduled to take place today, May 25th, at the Ohene Djan Stadium in Accra, the Ghanaian capital.
