Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien picks up serious knee injury during training
Recent reports reveal that Chelsea midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 sustained a knee injury during training, which is thought to be serious. While the club has confirmed the injury, they have not yet commented on the extent of the injury.
A statement on the official website read:
“Michael Essien suffered an injury to his right knee during training this week.
He will undergo tests over the next few days to determine the extent of that injury.
Until we have the full results of those tests we will not be commenting further.”
The injury came during a pre-season training session and threatens to keep Essien sidelined for an extended period of time. This could mean the Ghanaian international could miss the start, if not most of the upcoming season.
While Essien established himself as a key member of the Blues squad after his arrival in 2005 from Ligue 1 side Lyon for a fee of £24.4 million, recent injuries have hampered his progress with the English Premier League giants.
The 28-year-old holding midfielder helped the London side to the English Premier League crown in 2006 and then again in 2010, including various FA Cup and Carling Cup trophies. However, he has failed to play a major part over the past three years due to
injury.
In 2008, after signing a contract extension with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, Essien picked up a serious injury while on international duty in September. After a six month rest, Essien returned for the Blues, making 19 appearances that season and scoring 3 goals.
In the 2009-2010 season Essien picked up an injury once again while playing for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ghana-c2905, because of which he missed the remainder of the season with Chelsea. He scored four goals in 21 appearances in all competitions.
Essien missed the 2010 World Cup in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/South-Africa-c757 due to injury, but returned to fitness in time for the beginning of the 2010-2011 season. Despite being ever-present for Chelsea, the midfielder failed to make an impact for the Blues as they ended the season
trophy-less.
His current injury comes as a huge disappointment for the Blues, who are currently making preparations for their tour of Asia. As soon as the extent of the injury sustained is determined, the Blues can decide on whether or not a replacement is required.
The Blues have yet to make any signings in the summer transfer window, despite being linked with various players. They will also be aware that they will lose the option of selling the Ghanaian midfielder if the injury sustained is long term.
Michael Essien reportedly wanted a move to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid.
