English Premier League: Chelsea news update
Chelsea skipper John Terry labels season as unacceptable
While speaking to reporters, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 captain John Terry said that he felt their performance this season was unacceptable. The defending champions seem like an entirely different outfit this season. They are currently sitting on
the fifth spot in the English Premier League table, a possible 12 points behind league leaders Manchester United, who have a game in hand.
The Christmas and New Year’s period was especially tough on the Blues with injuries and suspensions to key players. Carlo Ancelotti’s side managed a miserable 10 points out of a possible 33, because of which they have been ruled
out of the title race. However, the Italian manager has remained confident during this time, saying that his side could still come back from the slump they were in.
Chelsea’s sudden decline has been credited to a few changes the club underwent a few months ago, the main one being the unexpected sacking of assistant coach Ray Wilkins. His departure coincided with injuries to some key players
because of which the Blues dropped points and lost their form. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/John-Terry-c18895 accepted the fact that his side were underperforming and admitted that they could not afford to drop any more points.
The Chelsea captain urged his side to step up and improve their form in order to try and get back in the title race. Terry said, “We're not playing at the level we can and we're slipping further behind the leaders with every point
we drop. That's unacceptable for a club like this, where we expect to win every game, and now we have to start to put things right.”
In their FA Cup third round fixture against Ipswich Town, the Blues were seemingly back to their old selves. Kalou opened the scoring, young striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Frank-Lampard-c14097 added two goals each, while Nicolas
Anelka also grabbed a goal. The match finished 7-0. While impressive on paper, one must realize it was against a 20th place Championship side that lost their manager just a day before the big match.
John Terry insisted that the Blues had potential to be competing with the top sides. He added, “This squad should be challenging at the top of the league, winning games and pushing hard in every competition. That remains our aim,
even if we have gone off course recently but, before we start thinking about silverware, we have to concentrate on starting to win games again.”
Chelsea chase Juventus centre back http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicola-Legrottaglie-c27757
Chelsea are on the lookout for a central defender to partner captain John Terry and currently have their sights set on Nicola Legrottaglie of Juventus. The Blues are facing tough competition from another north-London club but will
be hoping they land the Juventus defender in the January transfer window, having struggled defensively this season; a main reason behind their failure to maintain their lead at the top of the English Premier League. Legrottaglie seems like a suitable target,
having international and European experience.
After the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Ricardo-Carvalho-c30973, John Terry has not been able to establish a successful partnership with either Alex or Ivanovic, both of whom have been injured for most of this season. The 34-year-old defender might be
considered too old an addition to the already ageing squad, but to get through this season at a decent position in the domestic league the Blues need an experienced defender to partner Terry at the heart of defence. His arrival may just be what lifts Ancelotti’s
side out of their recent slump and restore them to their former glory.
