Chelsea sign 11-year-old
Chelsea have signed young Northampton Town prodigy Michael Gyasi for an undisclosed transfer fee.
The 11-year-old has spent three years with Northampton’s centre of excellence for young players.
Gyasi is already being tipped to have a career at the highest level. The striker had been monitored by a number of clubs, but Northampton and the player picked the Premier League Club.
Trevor Gould who manages the Northampton centre of excellence believes that the forward will develop at Chelsea.
He also stated that the deal highlights the high calibre of player that the Cobblers can produce.
"Not only is this is a superb opportunity for Michael, but it reinforces the quality of player we are bringing both into the club and through our centre of excellence," said Gould.
Gyasi will train with the Chelsea Youth team for the foreseeable future and if he develops he will sign a professional contract in five years time.
Gould suggested that he did not like to lose a player like Gyasi, but neither did he want to deny the 11-year-old an opportunity to play for a club like Chelsea.
"When a Premier League club like Chelsea come knocking, as long as the deal is right for the club, we will never stand in a boy's way. We obviously want to produce and keep our best players," stated Gould.
However, the manager of the centre of excellence also admitted that if a talented player is uncovered at Northampton, the club can’t refuse a big money offer.
Gould said, "Financially the deal is good for us, and the money we will receive will aid our youth development."
Northampton will hope that the publicity and money will aid them in recruiting more talented players like Gyasi.
While, Chelsea’s youth management team and scouts will hope that Gyasi will live up to his reputation and become a first team member in the future.
