Chelsea skipper http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 international insisted he was aware of what had gone wrong last season under manager Carlo Ancelotti and was determined
not to let the past repeat itself in the new Premier League season which kicks off today.
The Blues began last season with a bang, going on an unbeaten run in all competitions and cementing their place at the top of the Premier League table. However, they suffered their worst slump in over 15 years and soon found themselves out of the top five
and dumped out of all the cup competitions. They did manage to recover towards the end and secure a second place finish, but could not get their hands on silverware.
There were a list of reasons why the Blues failed to repeat their success under Ancelotti last season; from injuries to key players, to the premature and unexpected sacking of assistant manager Ray Wilkins to somewhat stubborn selection policies. Terry maintained
he was going to ensure his side returned to winning ways under new manager Andre Villas-Boas.
Terry said in an interview:
“The sign of a true champion is to bounce back if we do suffer a defeat and get together and pull together.”
He continued:
“We lost points against teams we maybe should have beaten.
Seeing the trophy without the blue-and-white ribbons on, it hurts, it really does.”
The Blues’ skipper urged his side to remain consistent throughout the season, something they had been unable to do so last season. Apart from loses to Manchester United and other top sides, the London side lost important points to lesser sides. Terry was
insistent on regaining the title from Manchester United, something his side are capable of, having done so in the past.
Along with the Red Devils, the central defender said he did not believe La Liga giants http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 were unbeatable, a reputation they have acquired after dominance both domestically and in Europe. However, Terry said he was confident in his side’s ability
to beat the Catalan side in Europe, if they were drawn against them in the UEFA Champions League.
Terry said:
“So, if we come across them early or later on in the Champions League, I believe, out of all the teams, we've got as good a chance as any.”
Terry also squashed the myth that the senior players at the squad, including himself, were untouchable. The England and Chelsea captain revealed he was at the risk of being benched as much as any player on the team. In fact, he revealed he was under more
pressure to be at his best even during training since he was setting an example for the rest of the team.
Terry added:
“I know there's this feeling out there that players like myself, Lamps and Didier, the players that have been there for a long time, take our place in the team for granted.
But it's the complete opposite.”
