England and Chelsea skipper John Terry remained confident in his side’s chances of qualifying for the 2012 Euro, despite drawing 2-2 against Switzerland at Wembley on Saturday.
This is the second home game for the 2012 Euro qualifier in which England failed to secure all three points.
If their current form continues, there’s a chance they could finish the group stages not leading their respective group.
England take on Montenegro later this year in October and anything less than a win will not settle in well with the coach or the supporters.
However, the Blues centre-back remained hopeful and promised his side a qualification into next years European competition.
Terry said while speaking to reporters:
“We still have to go to Montenegro which is looking like a crucial game at the moment.
We're hoping others can do us a favour but, whatever happens from now until the end, it's still in our hands.”
England, who had a highly impressive squad lined up to take on Switzerland, failed to deliver once again as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Switzerland-c3016 took a two goal lead in the first half.
England manager http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Fabio-c13152 Capello was not to happy with his side’s performance, as they gave away easy free kicks early on in the match.
Terry acknowledged his team had not been up to their best, presenting the Swiss with early opportunities to find the back of the net.
The Chelsea skipper continued:
“We always make it difficult for ourselves so we've certainly got the experience to deal with that.
Ideally, we'd like to be in a better position than we are now but we can still qualify as top of the group.”
England have been drawn in Group G along with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wales-c3041. They lead the group because of a superior goal difference but are currently level on points with second place Montenegro.
They require a win in their remaining fixture to guarantee a top finish, which could make all the difference as they progress to the next stage.
While the Italian manager chose to blame fatigue and exhaustion for his sides below the standard performance, Terry rejected all such claims.
He did however agree the team performed horribly in the first half:
“We were disappointed in the manner that we conceded the two goals.
That was disappointing and against any side, if you give away two goals, give someone a head start, then you know it's always going to be tough.”
Terry will be desperate to lead England to a Euro 2012 qualification, with his side having failed to make it to the European competition in 2008.
The Chelsea man was awarded the England captaincy in 2006 by then manager Steve McClaren in time for the 2006 World Cup.
He was removed by Fabio Capello and replaced by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rio-Ferdinand-c31173 in 2010 after some aspects of his private life became public.
After just a year though, in 2011, Terry was reinstated as the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Captain-c8314 after Ferdinand picked up a long term injury.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 of 67 appearances for England and has even managed to score 6 goals, an impressive feat for a central defender.
