Chelsea skipper John Terry reveals Abramovich wants to win everything
After their 2-0 win over Marseille in the Champions’ League group stages, Captain John Terry, revealed that Blues owner Roman Abramovich has made it clear that he wants his club to win everything this season. He said, “The message was clear from the owner
at the start of the season. He wants to win everything. And with the squad we have, he expects to”.
This may come as a surprise since Abramovich had previously claimed that he wanted to win the coveted European Cup. He would be satisfied as long as he knew that his team was giving their best, staying in contention for trophies, and playing attractive football
and would accept “glorious failure”.
However, now the Russian billionaire has communicated to his captain that he wants the quadruple this season.
His new demands can be expected after last season, when the Blues destroyed all competition to win the English Premier League and the FA Cup, their first double. The Blues did it in style too, scoring a total of 103 goals with Didier Drogba winning the golden
boot and goal keeper Petr Cech claiming the golden glove. Having won the Premier League, the FA Cup and the Carling Cup with various managers, it’s no surprise that the Chelsea owner wants the Champions League now.
The Carling Cup is no longer a possibility as Chelsea were knocked out of the competition by Newcastle United at Stamford Bridge, but the Russian owner would be just as happy with the treble.
The Carling Cup has always been a distant fourth priority compared to the other trophies, and that showed with Ancelotti’s team selection for the Carling Cup fixture. The Italian manager picked a younger, inexperienced side with the exception of John Terry
and Nicolas Anelka and the Blues still managed to put up a respectable performance, losing 4-3 to a late, injury time fluke goal.
“You can't prioritize one and put one ahead of the other. The Champions League is a massive trophy that still eludes us and we would love to go and win that”, Terry added. The captain confirmed that the Blues would like to maintain their dominance domestically
and retain the English Premier League and the FA Cup. But he did admit that the Champions League would be a dream come true for many players, it’s a trophy Chelsea have never been able to win.
John Terry went on talk about how he decided to stay on with the Blues after their various failures in the Champions League, the most notable one coming against Manchester United in the 2007 Champions League final.
Terry said that there had been a promise to bring on new signings to the club, big names like Franck Ribery, Sergio Aguero, Fernando Torres and Brazilian wonder kid Neymar. However, none of these players were brought in, manager Ancelotti only brought in
Ramires and Yossi Benayoun to strengthen the squad.
Terry said while stressing on the need for recruitments, “Us, Manchester United and Liverpool, nobody was really spending this summer – apart from Man City. Obviously with the resources they have got. We did that early on when Roman put his hand in his pocket
and bought a lot of players, but now we are seeing some young players coming through and making a difference”.
However, he did mention the young players, who had proved essential for the club after the departure of the older ones, he said, “Josh McEachran and Gaël Kakuta look excellent. At the same time we did lose some really experienced players, Joe Cole especially,
but we weren't the only side cutting back last year”.
With or without reinforcements, Chelsea did get off to a brilliant start this season, with their only setbacks coming against Newcastle in the Carling Cup and Manchester City in the Premier League.
However, they are yet to suffer a defeat in Europe and if they continue their good form, there is little doubt that the Blues can actually win the treble this season. Chelsea gear up to take on third place, Arsenal, over the weekend.
